A living room is a place where you relax with your family and friends. This is the room where your guests are entertained, which is why it should be decorated with all the necessary essentials that will reflect your personality is important. From choosing the right furniture pieces, painting the walls with suitable colours, installing proper lighting fixtures to adding other décor accessories; you should select everything based on the interiors of your home.

In this blog post by Divano Furniture, a furniture store in Mississauga, we are going over a few tips that will guide you in designing your living room. To find out more, keep reading this blog post.

  • Create a Focal Point

A focal point is the basis of a living room which should be kept in mind before designing it. For instance, if you have a large window in this room, then use this natural view and place the seating arrangement towards it. This will allow the natural light to enter the room and visitors will also get the outside view. Also, if you have a fireplace in your living room, then keep the seats opposite to it and enjoy the warmth and beauty of the fireplace in the cold weather.

Tip- If there is no natural focal point, then you can make a statement with a bold furniture piece like a yellow velvet sofa or a piece of art.

  • Choose Appropriate Furniture Pieces

Proper furniture pieces play a major role in beautifying the appearance of a living room and also makes a space for people to sit and relax. You should choose the right type of sofas, chairs, a coffee table and a wall cabinet. The latter is optional; you can skip this if you do not have enough space in your living room. Choose the other furniture pieces based on the interiors of your home. For instance, if you have a modern decor style, then select modular or sectional sofas with a low height coffee table.

  • Keep Enough Space for Movement

After selecting the furniture pieces, your next step is to arrange them properly to keep enough place to move around in the room. There should be space between the furniture pieces and the wall. Also, there should be enough space in the centre of the room where the coffee table is kept. For instance, if you have sectional sofas, place them against a blank wall in the shape of ‘L’ which will make enough space in the room.

  • Don’t Block the Entryway

Make way for your guests to enter your living space without any hassle which is why overcrowding the entrance should be avoided. Keep plants, furniture pieces and other décor items away from the entryway. This will make the room look inviting and pleasing to the guests.

  • Select a Colour Palette

Colours set the tone of the room and should be selected on the basis of your choice as you will see it every day. Blue and green have a calming effect whereas, orange, yellow and red are vibrant. The neutral shades like white and beige create an impression of more space. For instance, if you have a small living room, then painting the walls with white or beige is a good idea. You can paint one wall with a different bold colour to create a style statement in the room. For a spacious living room, you can paint the walls with dark colours like slate grey, purple or brown. Don’t overdo it; keep a light-coloured wall to break the monotony.

  • Install Right Lighting Fixtures

Proper lighting fixtures help in brightening up space. Install lighting fixtures in combinations of ceiling lights, sconces, chandeliers, lamp shades and floor lamps. These will create layers of light and illuminate the space appropriately. The chandeliers are always fixed above the seating arrangement for a better look and feel of the room whereas the lampshades and floor lamps are placed at the corners. If you keep one lamp in one corner, place two more on the opposite side to create a balance in the room.

  • Add Mirrors to Brighten the Room

Mirrors are an elegant addition to increasing the aesthetic appeal of any room. They also create an impression of more space which makes them a necessary inclusion to a small space. If your living room is falling short of space, then opt for large-scale mirrors and fix them against a wall. Also, if you have a window in your room, then place the mirror on the opposite side. This will not only open up space but also reflect the outside view into the room. You can also create a statement wall with different shaped mirrors which will act as a focal point of a room.

  • Place Area Rugs

Laying an area rug on the floor is the best way to complement the décor of your room as you can experiment with different colours, patterns and shapes. But, you should consider its size as it must fit the seating arrangement neatly. If the area rug is small, then the room will appear smaller.

  • Choose Artwork or Portraits

A piece of artwork in your living room can instantly uplift the face of your living room. You can choose a large painted picture or portraits of your loved ones and hang them on a wall against the sofa. A gallery wall with different pictures also looks great.

  • Decorate with Houseplants

Indoor plants purify the air in the room, so, keeping them in the living room is a great idea. You can keep potted or hanging plants. Also, you can keep them in floating shelves of your living room. But, choose plants that are easy to maintain like succulents, ferns and other houseplants.

Follow the above-listed tips and design your living room like the way you want. From choosing the furniture pieces to décor essentials, select everything that will suit your taste and preferences.
